As the new year kicks off, do you find yourself reaching for a new fitness goal? Maybe you’re an avid cyclist looking to get into the triathlon game. Or, you’ve signed up for a race this year, but you don’t really know the ins and outs of triathlon training. As an experienced professional triathlete, I can tell you that we all begin somewhere, and I’m here to help you get started!

Or, you’ve signed up for a race this year, but you don’t really know the ins and outs of triathlon training. As an experienced professional triathlete, I can tell you that we all begin somewhere, and I’m here to help you get started!

Keep it simple. All the logistics, training and gear involved in the triathlon sport can be overwhelming. Don't worry too much about that. You don't need all the premium equipment to do the sport, especially at the beginning. Just throw on some running shorts, bike shorts, whatever swimsuit you have, and in time you'll learn what your preferences are and evolve from there. Remember, triathlon is an endurance sport, not a sprint.

Find a coach. While you find free training plans online, you’ll find that an investment in a coach is worth it, particularly when it comes to race preparation. Think of it this way – if you were preparing to operate on someone, would you rather google it or go to medical school and have professors and other doctors teach you? It may seem drastic, but the same principles go for triathlon – you want an expert to guide you through for efficiency, safety, and maximum improvement and performance.

Connect with a local triathlon club. Three sports translate into a lot of training (effort and time wise) having some buddies to share the pain and the laughs will make it easier and more enjoyable. Don't be shy, we, triathletes, are a very welcoming community!
